Andrew Duncan Duff: born in 1876 Illinois; died in 1954 Idaho. (six siblings, he was eldest)
Father: Ashahel Duff, born in 1845 Illinois; died in 1921 Illinois (his parents were Ashahel Duff and Abigail Milligan)
Mother: Ruth Hanna Swett,  born in 1851 Maine; died in 1926 Illinois (her parents were John Akersweat, and Rachel Blake Wallace Marden)
The 1850 US Census lists Ashahel Duff Sr. as a farmer  in Illinois with 8 children. The 1860 census lists Ashahel Jr as living in Newberg, Pike, Illinois; his brother Carrol is listed as a farmer and his father is not listed, but his mother is. The 1880 census lists Ashahel Jr. as living in Spring  Creek, Illinois with a wife and two children. Oddly, he lists his father's birthplace as Kentucky and his mother's as Tennessee. He is a farmer and so are all the neighbors.
In the 1910 census Ashahel is listed as a farmer (this time both his parents are from Tennessee; son Andrew is listed as a teacher. In 1910 Ashahel is still a farmer and sons Harry and Vincent are listed as school teachers.
In 1910 Andrew Duff is listed as living in Nisqually Washington, with wife Marie and 18-month-old Donald. He is a time keeper at a sawmill. In the following year the couple will lose Donald and a new baby, Ruth, to an unnamed cause.
In 1920 Andrew is living in Shoshone Idaho with five children and Marie. In 1930 he is listed as living alone in Barber Idaho, and working as a millwright; many neighbors are unemployed or work in the sawmill.

The same year, 1930, Marie is living in Boise with the five children; she is a teacher. Neighbors include a builder, a mechanic, telephone operator, a plasterer and a stenographer. The best neighbor job listed is a “naturalist in vaudeville.”
World War I draft registration for Andrew Duncan Duff lists his home as Shoshone, ID, his profession as farmer, his eyes gray and his hair brown. It gives his birthday as Jan. 9, 1875.


Marie Nikolina Smith: Born in 1882 Wisconsin; died in 1964 Washington (youngest of two)
Father: Christian Bang Smith, born in 1842 Denmark; died in 1912 Wisconsin (his parents were Christen Rasmussen Schmidt and Christiane Cicile Bang of Denmark)
Mother: Kristine Marise Jensen, born in 1857 Denmark; died in 1892 Wisconsin (her parents were Jens Madsen and  Katrina Jensine Jensen of Denmark).
Kristine was 18 years younger than Christian's first wife, Karen (or Marie?). Karen died in 1878. leaving him with five children under the age of 11. Kristine also died young, when Marie was 10, her only sibling, Anina, died in 1887 at age 3.
The 1880 census listed Christian as a widower and farmer living in Waupaca, Wisconsin with five children under 11. All the neighbors were farmers, boarders or “keeping house.”
The 1910 Illinois census listed Christian as a widower of 68, living in the home of son  William, daughter-in-law Edna and daughter Anna, and grandson Harold Smith. William is listed as a farmer, Anna as a private nurse and Christian  as having “an income.”
